Session 5: Ladies First
There are those who see the positive discrimination of women as a discrimination that leads women to dependence, and there are those who see it necessary at a certain stage to overcome the injustices against women.
Does women get their rights in our society? Do you think there is a positive discrimination against women in our Yemeni society? Does the percentage of quotas that grant women a specific participation rate in all areas of society or should women be allowed to prove their own capabilities? Does this distinction offer greater opportunities for women or does it deprive other women of their opportunities? Do you think women deserve a greater proportion of affirmative action as they make up half the society? Or is it discrimination against men in return? Is positive discrimination for women a recognition of a problem for women in society?
On October 27, 2018, the fifth panel discussion was organized by the Basement Cultural Foundation with the support of the Prince Claus Fund. The first group (which included 15 participants) discussed the second topic chosen for discussion: .positive discrimination of women
The participants differed in favor of the positive discrimination of women because they had been persecuted and deprived of their rights for centuries, and opposed to being discriminated against only because they were women who were required to take into account their own competence and abilities. At the end of the session, participants presented proposals to grant women their basic rights without the need to discriminate, such as raising awareness of women’s role, rehabilitation and capacity-building, and assisting them in the physical independence they can effectively participate in society.
The project consists of 60 young men and women of different intellectual orientations and Yemeni regions. They are divided into four groups, each with 15 participants. Each group will hold three sessions to discuss various topics of interest to the community selected by the participants. Which are discussed. At a later stage of the project, these visions will be transformed into works of art and drama that will be presented to the public at a public event organized by the Foundation.
