Session 9: Chewing Qat

Is chewing Qat a real problem in Yemen, or is it a plant with benefits as well? Do you support those who see it as an economic and social disaster that must be eliminated?

Is Qat a catalyst for work that gives stability and calm and helps to accomplish business? Or is it a narcotic plant that harms human health and psychology? Does Qat contribute to the consolidation of social relations or lead to the neglect of family affairs? Does Qat cultivation provide jobs that could be lost by eliminating it? Or destroy the local economy and spoil the soil, agriculture and depletion of water? Does chewing qat reflect a negative image of the Yemeni man and show him primitive?

The first group discussed on Sunday, November 4, 2018, the third topic chosen for the discussion “Qat” in which participants discussed the subject of Chewing Qat in Yemeni society, if it is a bad habit that must be terminated or has advantages and benefits.

The participants differed among those who completely rejected the habit of chewing Qat which harms the youth and the society. They have psychological and economic risks and disadvantages. They reflect a negative image of the Yemeni. Another group defended qat, which is part of the customs of Yemeni society. , Meeting friends. Each group offered reasons for its position and the effects of khat that it sees in society and the solutions it sees to stop the use of Qat or to control its use.
