University degree has become less important to many people after the online courses and learning videos has entered the modern life. People see that lots of youth are not employed because the lack of experience even if they had a degree. Therefore, experience is more important in Yemen compared to certificate.

Training: 19 youths (of ages 14-17, gender-balanced) are chosen to attend the training of debate skill and about the topic.

Articles: 2 articles were written by youths Erfan Al-Ghoshaimi with thesis and Yousra Abdulla antithesis.

Sketch: The young youtuber Mazen Al-Saqqaf, a standup comedian was talking about the topic and different aspects comparing between the good and bad sides of both thesis and antithesis. And if people were to choose one of them which one will they choose? Considering that only 1% of applicants will join the governmental university while others are either to go private ones or not to go to university per se, but those who will not attend to university are more capable of joining work labor faster than university students therefore the have more experiences then the latter.

Event: On 17 March 2018, the Basement Cultural Foundation held a Debate under the title “Is the university certificate a criterion of efficiency?”. Two young people team aged between 15 and 20 were selected to participate in the debate. Which was published by the Basemant Foundation earlier, 18 participants were trained on the Debate skills in a special training course, and then selected six participants to present the debate.

Participated in the team supporting the thesis: Abdullah al-Uzari, a secondary student and member and founder of several initiatives, and the promise of Dahmashi student in the second grade secondary and a member of the Union of children of Yemen, and Abdul Rahman al-Osaily, a 15-year-old activist in the field of school debates.

The participating team included Raghad Dahmashi, 15 years old, a member of the Yemen Children’s Union, Mazen Jalal in the second secondary school who participated in several school debates, and Manal Al-Qawsi, a student in the first year.

The supporting team spoke about the importance of university degree in ensuring a stable job and income, and its role in achieving the minimum knowledge of the holder in the field of specialization, and its importance in granting the holder the confidence and the ability to practice his profession. While the other team spoke about the importance of experience compared to testimony, the reality proves that success is based on passion, self-development, experience and practice, and the most famous figures in the fields of science, arts, finance and business do not hold university degrees. Each group presented their arguments and responded to each other to prove its point of view. The public also participated in supporting and opposing the thesis. Some of the attendees expressed their admiration for the presentation presented by the participants despite their age and their ability to show, refute and persuade.

At the end of the debate, the public voted for the side that felt it was more persuasive. The result was for the opposing team, who believed that the university degree was not a criterion for efficiency, but rather the experience. A detailed report of the debate will be presented later on the Bismant Foundation page.
