Debate Event – Yemeni Tribal Customs are Maintaining Public Stability – With or Against Thesis?

The roles of Yemeni tribal customs in maintaining public stability has been a controversial issue within the intellectual elites of Yemen. Thus, Basement Cultural Foundation held this issue within its debating project Spaces. On the 7th of December 2019, the foundation made a public debate on the thesis “Yemeni Tribal Customs are Maintaining Public Stability – With or Against Thesis?” The two debating teams shared their justifications and proofs that support their stances. The team supporting the thesis has mentioned the roles of customs in providing social coherence socially, economically and culturally; hence they considered customs as a moral and legal sanctuary within the status quo. And they displayed some examples of their stances. While the opposing team spoke about the negative impacts of absence of law and applying law as an alternative for it. The opposing team mentioned some of the development experiences that have succeeded without customs, with some of the local experiences in which customs was an obstacle toward development, and the negative impact on women.
