A Discussion Session with Author Raghda Gamal and Mayar
In an atmosphere filled with dialogue and creativity, we hosted an exceptional discussion session last Thursday, July 16, as part of the Taiz Creative Hub activities. The session focused on the journey behind writing and illustrating the book Memoirs of a Girl Who Never Saw War by author and journalist Raghda Gamal.
The discussion covered several rich themes surrounding young adult literature. Author Raghda Gamal emphasized the importance of crafting stories for adolescents that balance reality and imagination. She highlighted how to address war and conflict without relying on explicit violence, using language that resonates with this age group and answers their questions thoughtfully.
Her daughter, Mayar, added a touching personal and artistic perspective by sharing behind-the-scenes insights into illustrating the book, highlighting her favorite artwork, and reflecting on how the image of the homeland takes shape in her creative imagination.
This event is part of the Yemeni Creative Hubs project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Goethe-Institut alongside the Basement Cultural Foundation.
