About Us – Basement Cultural Foundation

Before beginning
Basement was an architectural engineering office. Then, the founder Saba Al-Suleihi decided to start a cultural program from time to time breaking the work routine of engineers and trainees, which opened the field of knowledge and culture exchange between its members and society.
2009
From idea to reality
The idea started as a weekly lecture held every Thursday morning in the office under the name of “Knowledge Exchange Forum .” KEF has attracted youth and creative people from different places, because of its unique outcome. The co-founders , the architect Saba Al-Suleihi, YaseenGhalib and Dr.Yahia Al-Obali decided to put the first stone of Basement project. They have given Basement its name , and started to organize the events and invite all the artists and active people in the cultural field to perform on its stage. They also created a chance for the public audience to attend these events. The first event was on 26^th of April in 2009. Basement activities expanded to include music, art performances and plastic arts. Eventually ,the architectural engineering Office decided to withdraw and allow the forum, which young people needed as a unique and distinctive experience.

Basement Now
Basement now is considered as one of most important cultural foundations in Yemen. As its activities are started form 2009 till this moment.

Basement’s activities are not restricted on KEF events only, it also includes many of activities and projects and some of programs that are being founded by some international organizations.

Mission

Basement seeks to create an artistic space and atmosphere that enables youth (beginners, hobbyists, professionals) to display and develop their abilities . It also provides youth with unique opportunities to support their creativity and help them introducing themselves to the Yemeni society . In brief, Basement is an interactive space that bridges the gap between the young artists and public audience and strengthens bridges of communication with the society.

Objectives

1- Develop the artistic capacities of youth and encourage them to exchange their knowledge, learn and share experience.

2- Provide youth with safe spaces to express and discuss issues along with creative and artistic tools to spread the coexistence values.

3- Promoting human rights principles through art and engage artists in the development process.
