ُEvent 408- Intellectual Rights Between Artist and Producer

On the morning of Thursday, January 9, 2020, the event of the Knowledge Exchange Forum number 408 titled Intellectual Rights Between Artist and Producer was held. in which Basement reviewed its experiences in producing artworks with joint contracts between artists and the foundation, and displaying the terms of the agreements, and their terms and conditions. In addition, two mutual plastic art exhibitions were held on the sidelines of the event by the artists Mohammed Al-Bashiq and Raed Al-Hattami.

Shaimaa Jamal, Executive Director of Basement, spoke about Basement’s experience in producing joint artworks with a plastic artist funded by grantees. Shaimaa presented the terms of the contract in the foundation’s agreements with the artists and the types of joint ownership. Also, the artist Ghada Haddad talked about her experience with some institutions, notifying that the artists to read the terms of the contract before signing, On the other hand, Mr. Abdel-Ghani Naji spoke about mutual rights between the artist and institutions, noting that the contracts should be between the entity and the artists should be beneficial and limited and should consider not trying to exploit the need of artists for financing their products.

Mr. Majed Al-Moalami talked about the idea of ​​documenting paintings and artworks in the Ministry of Culture as intellectual  properties and the contracts should be limited by certain periods of time.

Mr. Abdul Wasea Al-Adoumi on his experience in the field of registering the copyrights in brief. 

Nabil Qassem talked about China’s experience in intellectual rights that provided the whole world good products with convenient prices and without these policies that would not have happened.

Shihab Al-Ahdal talked about the difference between foundations and charities, and the difference between collaborating in the concepts and ideas of artworks and financing the artworks. In the first, the basic idea is that the foundation has a right in the produced works since it’s collaborated with its major outlines, hence the work should be mutual between the foundation and the artist and the terms should be very precise. 

Aws al-Iryani referred to Chinese law that abolished the property rights of any foreign company, and if the copyright laws were imposed in the country many people will lose their jobs and many will never get the chance to have many programs and applications on their computers, for instance.

Finally, the two mutual plastic exhibitions were opened. The first, Eye of The Needle by the plastic artist and painting teacher, Muhammad Al-Bashiq, and the other was “For Art’s Sake” by the painter and graphic designer, Raed Al-Hattami, who both reviewed their artistic experience in drawing.
